Koumas earns Bellamy and Williams praise after Portugal performance

Lewis Koumas has earned praise from Wales manager Craig Bellamy and team-mate Neco Williams after his performance in the 1-0 Nations League defeat by Portugal in Lisbon. BBC Sport Wales reported that both highlighted the Liverpool forward's development, with Bellamy also pointing to the club's decision to retain him this season following a series of loans.

The 21-year-old came close to changing the result at Estadio Jose Alvalade. In the 74th minute, his left-footed effort from close range was blocked on the goal-line by Portugal defender Ruben Dias. Wales were missing several key players against the defending Nations League champions, but Koumas' chance gave them an opportunity to draw level despite those absences.

Bellamy recalled another international test for Koumas, against Turkey roughly two years earlier, when the forward's display convinced him he could handle that level. The manager described that earlier performance as outstanding. His comments placed the Portugal outing in the context of a player whose suitability for international football he had already seen during a previous demanding assignment.

Koumas has remained at Liverpool under Andoni Iraola after loan spells with Stoke City, Birmingham City and Hull City. Discussing that decision, Bellamy stressed that staying at Anfield was not simply a choice the player could make himself: Liverpool had wanted to keep him. His remarks identified the club's decision as an important part of the forward's current situation.

Williams, who left Liverpool in 2022 seeking more regular playing time and now plays for Nottingham Forest, offered a team-mate's assessment of Koumas' progress. He said the forward's confidence was increasing with each appearance and described him as a player who keeps working. Williams also said additional matches, experience and maturity would help Koumas continue to improve.

The comments, reported by BBC journalist Ian Mitchelmore, followed a defeat in which Koumas' late opportunity was stopped rather than converted. Bellamy's praise concerned his capacity to compete at international level, while Williams focused on the development and sustained effort he had observed. Both offered positive assessments of the young forward despite Wales leaving Lisbon without a result.
