Joe Worrall Targets Promotion Push After Deadline-Day Wrexham Move

Joe Worrall has set his sights on helping Wrexham challenge for promotion after completing a deadline-day move from Burnley. The 29-year-old defender told BBC Sport that the transfer gives him an opportunity to prove his Premier League credentials to himself and his former club after a frustrating spell in which regular starting chances were limited.

Worrall made 27 appearances across two years with Burnley but started only eight league matches, according to the BBC’s report. Injuries affected his attempt to establish a larger role during the club’s Championship promotion campaign in 2025. He later found opportunities difficult to secure in the Premier League under manager Scott Parker and said he believed he could have contributed more.

The centre-back arrived at Wrexham with extensive Championship experience and a previous promotion on his record. He captained his hometown club Nottingham Forest to victory in the 2024 play-offs. Worrall said his immediate priorities are staying fit, demonstrating his value and helping Wrexham pursue a place in the Premier League, whether that happens this season or later.

A starting place is not guaranteed. Worrall watched from the bench as Wrexham recorded consecutive clean sheets, first winning 3-0 at Millwall and then drawing 0-0 at Swansea. He acknowledged that he may need to wait for his opportunity in Phil Parkinson’s team, while the manager praised the new signing’s early influence and personality within the squad.

Worrall could face Burnley only a week after leaving when the clubs meet at Wrexham on Tuesday. His former side entered the fixture without a win this season following relegation to the Championship. Parkinson said Wrexham would respect Burnley’s quality while concentrating on their own performance, and he can also draw on Worrall’s recent knowledge of the visiting dressing room.

Burnley’s squad now includes Jamie Vardy, the former Leicester City and England striker who joined as a free agent after leaving Cremonese. Wrexham had also been linked with Vardy before strengthening their attack on deadline day by signing Callum O’Hare from Sheffield United. Worrall’s arrival gives Parkinson another experienced option as Wrexham seek their first home victory of the season.
