Jason Day Labels Tiger Woods DUI Decision as Selfish Ahead of Masters
As the golf world prepares for The Masters tournament at Augusta National, Australian professional Jason Day has delivered pointed criticism of Tiger Woods regarding his recent driving under the influence arrest, while simultaneously expressing deep sympathy for the embattled legend.
Day, speaking ahead of The Masters which begins Thursday, did not mince words about Woods recent legal troubles. The 38-year-old Australian called Woods actions a little bit selfish, particularly emphasizing the danger posed to innocent bystanders.
He was my hero - he is my hero, Day acknowledged during his pre-tournament press conference. The reason why I play golf is because of this tournament and Tiger. Its hard to see him go through what hes going through, and especially under the microscope... it must be hard to be who he is and have everything, everyone look on, kind of down on him.
However, Days sympathy came with a firm rebuke of Woods decision-making. The only thing that I dont understand is that its a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harms way, as well, Day stated.
The arrest affidavit painted a troubling picture of Woods condition during the incident. Officers reported that Woods was sweating profusely, his pupils were extremely dilated, and his movements appeared lethargic and slow. These details have added gravity to an already serious situation for the 15-time major champion.
Day offered insight into Woods mindset, suggesting that the golfs legendary competitive drive may have contributed to poor judgment. But when youre the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything, and thats probably why hes probably driving and a little bit under the influence, Day explained.
The absence of Woods from this years Masters marks a significant milestone in tournament history. It will be the first Masters since 1994 that features neither Woods nor three-time champion Phil Mickelson, who is stepping away from golf for an extended period due to family health matters.
Harris English, another American professional, joined the chorus of players expressing support for Woods recovery. Hes such a legend in this game, somebody I looked up to, English said. I know hes going to get through this. He has a big fight ahead of him. Hes a fighter - thats what he does.
Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, acknowledged the broader impact on professional golf. Lets be honest, without Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in the events, in golf, when they both step away, honestly I feel it hurts the game of golf, Reed observed. But at the same time, we want them to come back and be healthy and ready to go.
Woods, whose last Masters victory came in 2019, has been largely absent from major championship competition. He has not played a major since the 2024 Open Championship and has participated in only five of the past 16 majors, withdrawing from two of those events.
Adding to the uncertainty surrounding his future, Woods has also declined the opportunity to serve as United States Ryder Cup captain for next years competition in Ireland.
As Augusta National prepares to host golfs most prestigious tournament, the absence of its most transformative figure looms large, while his peers grapple with supporting their hero through his most challenging period.
