Iliman Ndiaye Embraces Champions League Step After Manchester City Debut

Iliman Ndiaye has described his move to Manchester City as the Champions League opportunity he had been waiting for after making an immediate Premier League debut for his new club. BBC Sport reported that the 26-year-old Senegal international completed a £60 million deadline-day move from Everton before starting City's 1-0 victory over Coventry.

A transfer to Tottenham had appeared possible during the final week of the window after Spurs agreed a deal with Everton. According to the BBC, Tottenham could not proceed after failing to sell Richarlison, opening the way for City. Ndiaye said he remained patient throughout the process and was delighted when Manchester City's interest became concrete.

The winger explained that Champions League football was a central factor in his decision. He said leaving Everton would only make sense for a club competing in Europe's leading tournament and described City as one of the world's best teams. Manchester City's own website reported that Ndiaye signed a five-year contract running through the summer of 2031 after discussions with manager Enzo Maresca and director of football Hugo Viana.

Maresca put Ndiaye directly into the starting lineup against Coventry, alongside fellow new arrival Enzo Fernandez. City said Fernandez was called into the side after Nico O'Reilly sustained a knock during the warm-up. Erling Haaland scored the match's only goal in the 26th minute, heading in Antoine Semenyo's cross to preserve City's winning start to the league season.

Ndiaye attempted eight dribbles on his debut, more than any other player in the match, according to BBC Sport. He was replaced by academy graduate Ryan McAidoo after 87 minutes following treatment on the field, but later said the issue was only cramp. Ndiaye described the victory as an ideal start and said his new teammates had welcomed him well.

The move completes a striking rise through English and European football. Ndiaye began his professional career with non-league Boreham Wood, later played for Hyde United and Sheffield United, and spent a season at Marseille before Everton signed him for £15 million in 2024. He scored 17 goals across two seasons for Everton and acknowledged that leaving was difficult because of the connection he had developed with the club's supporters and players. At City, he said his focus is now on pursuing further achievements and helping the team compete for trophies.
