Antonelli's Baku qualifying crash leaves Mercedes title rivals far apart

Kimi Antonelli's Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying ended with a damaged Mercedes and 16th place on Friday, while team-mate George Russell secured pole position. Formula 1's official reporting confirmed that the championship leader struck the inside wall at Turn 1 in Baku, leaving the two Mercedes drivers separated by 15 places in the qualifying classification.

The impact damaged the front-left corner of Antonelli's car. Race engineer Peter Bonnington instructed him to stop somewhere safe because the team could not repair it in time to continue. Antonelli's earlier lap was fast enough to qualify for Q2, but he could take no further part. His final position therefore reflected an enforced absence from the second segment, rather than elimination on pace in Q1.

Antonelli accepted responsibility afterwards, explaining that he had misjudged the change in grip from his opening lap. Formula 1 reported that he regarded the incident as a reminder to maintain his concentration. He still expressed confidence in the car's speed and hoped to recover positions in the race, without claiming that another comeback victory was assured.

Russell converted Mercedes' pace into his fifth pole of the season, recording 1 minute 42.526 seconds. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished 0.837 seconds behind him, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri just one thousandth of a second slower than Leclerc. Isack Hadjar qualified fourth and Lando Norris fifth, according to the official session report. Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly and Max Verstappen occupied the next three positions.

BBC Sport reported that Antonelli's preparations had already been disrupted by a hydraulic leak during Thursday's opening practice. The problem cost him running in both sessions that day. Even so, he was only 0.252 seconds behind Russell in final practice and had been quicker than his team-mate on their first qualifying laps before the collision ended his session.

Antonelli holds an 81-point championship advantage over Russell. The Briton nevertheless cautioned against discounting his team-mate, pointing to Antonelli's Italian Grand Prix victory from 19th on the grid. Qualifying has given Russell an opportunity to reduce the gap in Saturday's race, but no championship points have yet changed hands as a result of the Baku session.
