Dylan Lawlor targets November Wales return after Cardiff injury comeback
Dylan Lawlor is targeting a return to Wales duty in November after making his Cardiff City comeback from a knee injury. The 20-year-old defender told the BBC’s Welsh-language podcast Y Coridor Ansicrwydd that his priority is to be fit for the national team’s games against Portugal and Norway, having missed their four recent Nations League fixtures.
Watch the highlights:
According to BBC Sport, Lawlor suffered the injury while playing for Wales against Ghana in June. It ruled him out of pre-season and the beginning of Cardiff’s Championship campaign. He returned as a substitute in the victory over Charlton immediately before the recent international break, but that appearance came too late for him to be involved in the Wales camp.
Lawlor said he had not been in contention for that squad and was instead concentrating on November. He expressed disappointment at missing the chance to face Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Norway’s Erling Haaland. His stated ambition is to test himself against them next month, although he presented that as a hope rather than confirming that he would be available or selected.
The defender has made six senior appearances for Wales since Craig Bellamy handed him his debut in September 2025. At club level, he became an important member of Brian Barry-Murphy’s Cardiff team during last season’s promotion to the Championship. In the BBC interview, Lawlor said the two coaches’ detailed approach and shared emphasis on their own teams’ strengths made moving between club and international football straightforward for him.
His progress followed opportunities under Aaron Ramsey, who was Cardiff’s interim manager when Lawlor made his league debut as a second-half substitute against Norwich City in the final match of the 2024-25 season. Barry-Murphy took over in June 2025 after Cardiff’s relegation. Lawlor had already made his senior Cardiff debut against Aston Villa in the FA Cup fifth round that February.
Lawlor also credited Ramsey as an influence on his development. Both attended Ysgol Cwm Rhymni in Caerphilly County, and the defender described Ramsey as an inspiration during his childhood. Having subsequently worked alongside him and under him, Lawlor said he valued the advice Ramsey offered on improving his game.
