Enric Mas Wins Vuelta Stage Nine and Extends Overall Lead

Enric Mas won stage nine of the Vuelta a Espana at the summit of Aitana and strengthened his hold on the race leader's red jersey. BBC Sport reported that the Spanish Movistar rider attacked three kilometres from the finish of the 187-kilometre route, then resisted Britain's Oscar Onley to claim the victory.

Mas and Onley were credited with the same finishing time of five hours, 10 minutes and 40 seconds. Primoz Roglic crossed the line 12 seconds later in third, with Felix Gall fourth at 18 seconds. Cristian Rodriguez completed the stage's top five, finishing 20 seconds behind Mas.

The win increased Mas's general-classification advantage over Roglic to one minute 18 seconds. Gall remained third overall, one minute 39 seconds off the lead, while the 23-year-old Onley moved up to fourth. Onley now trails Gall by 41 seconds in the contest for the final podium position.

Mas had taken the red jersey after previous leader Tadej Pogacar withdrew from the race following a crash on stage eight. The BBC reported that Pogacar was in hospital and required surgery. Mas declined to wear the jersey during Saturday's podium ceremony out of respect for the injured rider, before racing in red on Sunday.

The stage was an uphill test that concluded on Aitana and offered an opening for the general-classification contenders after Pogacar's exit. Mas, a three-time Vuelta runner-up, made his move inside the final three kilometres and finished ahead of Onley in the sprint. The result was Movistar's first victory on home territory in five years and Mas's second career Vuelta stage win, following his first in 2018.

Riders now have the race's first rest day before stage 10. According to the BBC report, the next route covers 184 kilometres between Alcaraz and Elche de la Sierra and includes three category-three climbs. Mas will resume the race with a lead of more than a minute, while Roglic, Gall and Onley occupy the next three places in the overall standings.
