Dodgers Edge Rockies in High-Altitude Thriller to Sweep Coors Field Series
Los Angeles completed a three-game road sweep at Coors Field on Friday, edging Colorado 6-5 in a back-and-forth battle that showcased both clubs' firepower in the thin Denver air. The victory kept the Dodgers atop the NL West while handing the Rockies their fifth straight home loss of the young season.
Watch the highlights:
The game flipped scripts repeatedly. Colorado jumped out to an early lead when Ryan McMahon's two-run homer in the first inning off Dodgers starter Bobby Miller gave the Rockies a 2-0 advantage. Miller struggled through four innings, allowing four runs on six hits, including a solo shot by Brenton Doyle in the third.
Los Angeles responded with a five-run middle innings burst. Shohei Ohtani led off the fourth with a double and came around to score on a Freddie Freeman single. The big blow came from Andy Pages, whose three-run homer off Colorado starter Antonio Valverde in the fifth inning turned a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 Dodgers lead. Pages finished 2-for-4 with two runs driven in.
"We knew this series wasn't going to be easy," Pages said after the win. "Coors Field is a different animal. You just stay locked in at the plate and trust the approach."
The Dodgers added an insurance run in the seventh when Mookie Betts crossed home on a wild pitch by Colorado reliever Seth Halvorsen. Colorado threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs against Dodgers closer configuration, but a hard lineout to right ended the threat. Michael Kopech secured the final three outs for his fourth save of the season.
Ohtani finished 3-for-4 at the plate, falling a triple shy of the cycle and reaching base in all five plate appearances. The Japanese superstar is now batting .367 through the first month of the season, a number that puts him firmly in the early NL MVP conversation.
"Shohei continues to do things that just don't seem normal," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "The at-bats he's putting together right now are elite-level stuff. He's in a great place."
The Rockies drops to 8-12 on the season, a start that has many in Denver bracing for another long summer at altitude. Colorado manager Bud Black acknowledged the tough stretch but pointed to improvements in the rotation. "We're not far away from turning some of these close losses into wins. Our bullpen has been put in tough spots early, and that's something we're addressing."
The Dodgers improve to 14-6 and will head home to host the Angels on Saturday night, with Clayton Kershaw taking the mound in the Freeway Series opener.
