Deterministic denies Notable Speech a repeat Breeders' Cup Mile victory
Deterministic won the Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on Saturday, holding off a late challenge from defending champion Notable Speech. According to the Guardian's live coverage, Kendrick Carmouche rode the winner in a field of 13, with Lake Forest finishing third. The result ended Notable Speech's attempt to win the race for a second consecutive year.
Watch the highlights:
Notable Speech, trained by Charlie Appleby, had beaten Deterministic in the Grade One Woodbine Mile earlier in the season. Their finishing order was reversed in Kentucky despite another strong finish from the defending champion. Deterministic started at 5-1 on the local tote, while Notable Speech was sent off as the even-money favourite.
The decisive gap developed before the final stretch. Cabo Spirit led during the race, with Deterministic racing next and Puerto Rico in third after recovering from a slow start. Deterministic took the lead and was in front entering the final furlong, leaving Notable Speech to try to make up ground from further back in the field.
William Buick's mount was three wide around the final turn and still had five lengths to recover on Deterministic at the top of the stretch, the Guardian reported. He closed on the leader but could not get past. Appleby had gone into the contest with four wins from five previous runners in the Mile, but could not add another victory this time.
Earlier on the card, Japan's T O Elvis produced a successful late challenge in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Ridden by Ryusei Sakai, he caught Englishman close to the finish to win another 13-runner contest. Englishman took second, with Liam Smith third. Englishman had started as the 4-5 favourite on the local tote despite being drawn in stall 13.
Liam Smith set the early pace in the Sprint before Englishman moved into the lead. T O Elvis was at least eight lengths behind when Englishman went ahead two furlongs out, according to the Guardian's account. He continued to gain through the stretch and reached the front two strides from the line, securing a dirt-track victory for Japan.
