Coventry beat Newcastle 4-1 to end 25-year wait for Premier League home win
Coventry moved out of the relegation zone as four different scorers secured a landmark home victory over Newcastle.

Coventry City defeated Newcastle United 4-1 on Monday to record their first Premier League home victory in 25 years. Press Association reported that the win at the Coventry Building Society Arena lifted Frank Lampard's team out of the relegation zone, with late goals ensuring Newcastle could not turn a second-half response into a comeback.

Watch the highlights:

Jack Rudoni converted a sixth-minute penalty after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek fouled Sidiki Cherif. Before the interval, Bobby Thomas cleared Matias Fernandez-Pardo's effort off the line after the Newcastle attacker had rounded Carl Rushworth. Cherif then doubled Coventry's advantage early in the second half, shooting through defenders after a long throw was headed clear.

Sven Botman scored in the 70th minute to make it 2-1, but Coventry restored their cushion through Ellis Simms in the 81st minute. Stephen Mfuni added the fourth five minutes later. Newcastle had also lost 4-1 at Leeds in their previous outing, making this another heavy away defeat.

BBC Sport reported that Coventry finished the night in 14th place, following up their victory at Nottingham Forest before the international break. It was their first four-goal performance in the top division since beating Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 in May 2000. Their earlier home league fixtures this season had ended in defeats by Hull and Brighton, without Coventry scoring in either game.

Cherif made his first Premier League start following his summer arrival from Fenerbahce. At 19 years and 301 days, he became Coventry's youngest scorer in the competition since Robbie Keane against Middlesbrough in April 2000, according to the BBC. The goal was also his first in four appearances for the club, adding to his contribution in winning the opening penalty.

Lampard said the result should strengthen his players' confidence, while stressing the need to avoid becoming overconfident. He pointed to the limited Premier League experience of several members of his squad and said he was seeing rapid development. The manager also praised Cherif's appetite for training and improvement, while warning that Coventry must keep working at their maximum level.
