Ciaron Brown double sends Northern Ireland past Ukraine in 3-0 win
Ciaron Brown scored his first two international goals as Northern Ireland beat Ukraine 3-0 in Slovakia. The result kept Michael O'Neill's side unbeaten and three points clear in their Nations League group.

Ciaron Brown scored twice as Northern Ireland beat Ukraine 3-0 in Trnava, Slovakia, on Friday to strengthen their position at the top of Nations League Group B2. BBC Sport reported that Brown's first international goals, either side of an Isaac Price header, secured a second win in three matches for Michael O'Neill's unbeaten side.

Watch the highlights:

Northern Ireland opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Kieran Morrison delivered a corner and Ruairi McConville headed the ball back across goal. Brown reacted to turn it over the line. The visitors doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute, when Morrison supplied the cross for Price to head home. It was Price's 11th international goal and his first in more than a year.

Morrison, 19, was making his first competitive start for Northern Ireland. The winger, on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Liverpool, helped create both first-half goals after being selected in an unusually young side. According to the BBC, the starting team averaged 22 years of age, Northern Ireland's youngest recorded line-up since World War Two. Brown, 28, was its oldest player.

Ukraine were largely restricted to attempts from distance before the interval, although Mykola Matviyenko and Heorhiy Sudakov had opportunities after the restart. Brown added the third goal in the 61st minute by flicking on a free-kick. Goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk came off his line but missed the header, allowing the ball to roll in. McConville let it cross the line without applying another touch.

Tom Atcheson subsequently deflected a Matviy Ponomarenko effort onto the post as Northern Ireland protected their third consecutive clean sheet of the campaign. O'Neill praised his team's preparation and discipline in comments to BBC Sport NI, while highlighting the performances of Atcheson and McConville. The victory followed Northern Ireland's first away Nations League win, against Georgia, and gave them successive away victories for the first time since September 2021.

With seven points from three fixtures, Northern Ireland are three clear of both Ukraine and Hungary. They have scored four goals without conceding at the halfway stage of the group campaign. Georgia, bottom with one point, visit Windsor Park on Monday, when O'Neill's team will have the opportunity to complete the opening four-match sequence without a defeat.
