Charlton Go Top of Championship as Grant Seals Third Straight Win

Charlton Athletic moved to the top of the Championship with a 1-0 victory over Preston North End, extending their perfect start to three league matches. The Guardian reported that Karlan Grant scored the decisive goal, his first for the club since returning on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion.

The result left Charlton as the division’s only team with a 100% record after the opening three games. It is also the first time the south London club have won their first three matches of a second-tier season since 1992-93. Manager Nathan Jones stressed after the match that the nine-point start was significant but said it was far too early to discuss promotion.

Millwall began the day with a perfect record but lost 5-1 at Southampton after initially taking the lead through Mark Sykes. Cyle Larin scored twice for Southampton, while Finn Azaz, Leo Scienza and Tom Fellows also found the net. The victory erased the effect of Southampton’s four-point deduction.

Wolves also recovered from conceding first to beat Stoke City 4-1 at Molineux. Sam Gallagher put Stoke ahead in the second minute with a long-range finish, but Rodrigo Gomes scored twice in three minutes to turn the match around before halftime. Raúl Jiménez converted a second-half penalty and Jordan James completed the scoring on his home debut. Wolves remained unbeaten and moved into second place.

Swansea City climbed to third with a 3-0 win at Derby County. Joseph Opoku opened the scoring, Eom Ji-sung added the second shortly before halftime and Ronald struck in second-half stoppage time. Swansea collected seven points from their first nine, while Derby remained without a victory. Queens Park Rangers also reached seven points after overturning a deficit to win 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers.

Elsewhere, Norwich City earned their first league win of the campaign by beating Burnley 4-1, with Mo Touré and Andre Brooks scoring two goals each. Middlesbrough defeated West Brom 3-1 as Will Lankshear scored twice, taking his total to six goals in five games since joining from Tottenham. Lincoln City recorded a notable 1-0 victory at Bolton Wanderers through Ben House, their first win in England’s second tier since April 1961, according to The Guardian’s roundup.
