Charlton Beat West Ham 2-1 as Late Penalty Goes Begging
Charlton Athletic beat West Ham United 2-1 at London Stadium on Saturday, leaving the relegated Hammers with one point from their opening two Championship matches. BBC Sport reported that Taty Castellanos missed a stoppage-time penalty as West Ham’s first home league game of the season ended in defeat.
Watch the highlights:
Lloyd Jones gave Charlton the lead in the seventh minute. According to BBC Sport, West Ham allowed a long throw to bounce inside their penalty area before Jones struck. Tyreece Campbell doubled the advantage after half-time when Konstantinos Mavropanos was dispossessed close to his own penalty area.
West Ham reduced the deficit but could not complete a recovery, with Castellanos’ late penalty miss ending their clearest final opportunity to salvage a point. The result followed an opening-day draw at Burnley in which the Hammers surrendered a 2-0 lead. Their early league return now stands at one draw and one defeat.
The home side controlled more than 77% of possession and recorded an expected-goals total of 2.96, compared with Charlton’s 0.57, BBC Sport reported. West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo said his team created numerous situations but lacked accuracy in both penalty areas. He also said they needed to defend better.
Nuno acknowledged the frustration of a crowd reported at 62,000 and said West Ham had let their supporters down. He rejected the suggestion that the London Stadium attendance should work in opponents’ favour, saying the crowd was there to support his side and deserved a winning performance.
West Ham next face Southampton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. Their following Championship fixtures are against Watford and Wolves, both described by BBC Sport as unbeaten. Charlton, meanwhile, leave London Stadium with three points secured by their early breakthrough, Campbell’s second-half goal and a late penalty escape.
