Brighton score five as Coventry remain goalless after four league defeats

Brighton beat Coventry City 5-0 away in the Premier League on Sunday, leaving Frank Lampard's side without a point or a goal after four matches. BBC Sport reported that the defeat extended Coventry's difficult return to the division after 25 years away and marked their worst start to a league season since 1919-20.

Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring with a controlled touch, a header between defenders and a low finish, according to the Guardian's match report. Brighton also needed goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to protect their advantage. He stopped a Jack Rudoni volley and header, ensuring Coventry's first-half opportunities did not produce an equaliser before the interval.

The match turned further against the hosts after the break. Malick Yalcouye ran behind the defence and finished past Carl Rushworth for Brighton's second. Taiwo Awoniyi was then dismissed for striking Maxim De Cuyper with his elbow. A foul by Bobby Thomas on Kostoulas subsequently gave Pascal Gross a penalty, which he converted for 3-0.

Lewis Dunk added the fourth with a long-range shot into the top corner, before Yasin Ayari completed the scoring with a curling finish in added time. The Guardian reported that Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler credited his side's range of goalscorers and efficiency in front of goal, rather than reliance on one attacking player.

Coventry's first-half performance had offered more resistance than the final margin suggested. The BBC recorded 10 attempts before the interval, with Frank Onyeka and Rudoni among those creating danger while Brighton led by only one goal. But the second goal and dismissal soon after the restart changed the contest, leaving the home side facing another defeat despite those earlier chances.

Lampard said his players needed to accept responsibility and raise their level, while stressing that work would continue rather than allowing the squad to feel sorry for itself. As the BBC noted, Coventry's opening programme has already included away games against Arsenal and Manchester City. Four matches into their return, however, their search for both a first league goal and a first point continues.
