Billy Loughnane crowned youngest British champion jockey since 1923
Billy Loughnane collected the British champion jockey trophy at Ascot aged 20 after beating Oisin Murphy to the title. The Irish rider is also targeting Sir Gordon Richards' calendar-year Flat winners record.

Billy Loughnane collected Britain's champion jockey trophy at Ascot on Saturday, becoming the youngest winner of the title since Charlie Elliott in 1923. BBC Sport reported that the 20-year-old Irish rider finished ahead of five-time champion Oisin Murphy, adding the championship to a season that has already brought his first Classic success and more than 220 victories.

Watch the highlights:

The title comes four years after Loughnane made his racing debut. His first Classic arrived in May when he won the 2,000 Guineas, and he has added four other Group One wins this year. Bow Echo has been central to that success: Loughnane rode the horse to victory in the Guineas, the St James's Palace Stakes and the Sussex Stakes.

At Ascot, Loughnane received a guard of honour on his way to the parade ring for the presentation and celebrated with his parents, Mark and Clare. His father is a trainer, and Loughnane recalled accompanying him to Wolverhampton races on Saturdays between the ages of six and 12. He described riding horses as both his lifelong ambition and a job he loves.

Reflecting on his first ride at Newcastle nearly four years earlier, Loughnane said his aim at the time had simply been to ride a few winners. He had not imagined reaching his current position so quickly. Murphy, who challenged him during the title race, praised the younger jockey's discipline, work ethic and results, saying he was pleased to see Loughnane succeed.

Loughnane now has another target: Sir Gordon Richards' record of 269 Flat winners in a calendar year, set in 1947. According to the BBC report, he is also considering another championship campaign in 2027, although he has not committed to one. The record remains a goal rather than an achievement, with his annual tally reported as more than 220 so far.

The presentation shared the Ascot programme with a successful afternoon for William Buick. The British-Norwegian jockey won the Champion Stakes aboard Ombudsman and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Talk of New York. He then partnered Fifth Column to victory in the Balmoral Handicap, completing a treble on the day Loughnane received his championship trophy.
