Barcelona report PSG to UEFA over chainsaw tifo at Champions League match
Barcelona have reported Paris Saint-Germain to UEFA over a large supporters' display before Tuesday's Champions League match at the Parc des Princes. According to BBC Sport and Anadolu Agency, the Spanish club said the imagery encouraged violence and hatred, and condemned other offensive banners shown during the evening in Paris.
Watch the highlights:
The tifo appeared behind one of the goals before kick-off and depicted a masked character wearing a PSG shirt attacking Barcelona's badge with a blood-covered chainsaw. A French slogan beneath the image referred to a Parisian-style massacre. Barcelona's objections concerned both that display and the language used on separate banners.
In a statement reported by BBC Sport, Barcelona described the images as disturbing and argued that the combination of imagery and wording was incompatible with sporting respect. The club said football should allow passionate competition between opponents without promoting hatred or violence. Its statement also stressed fair play and the need for mutual respect between rivals.
Mundo Deportivo, citing La Vanguardia, reported that Barcelona submitted a formal complaint to UEFA's match delegate about the violent content. The club also asked for banners carrying an explicit insult against Barcelona to be removed during the game. Those requests extended the complaint beyond the giant pre-match display to other material inside the stadium.
Anadolu's report identified Article 16 of UEFA's disciplinary regulations as relevant to provocative messages displayed by supporters at sporting events. BBC Sport reported that the provisions can lead to disciplinary measures, including a 10,000-euro fine for a first offence. That describes a potential sanction under the rules, rather than a penalty confirmed against PSG in the reports reviewed.
PSG won the match 4-2, ending Barcelona's run of two victories at the start of their Champions League campaign, while the defending champions maintained their own perfect start with a third win. BBC Sport said it had approached both UEFA and PSG for comment. Its report did not include a response from either organisation or an announced disciplinary decision.
