Banchero Faces the Heat as Orlando Magic Head to Philly for Play-In Showdown
Paolo Banchero looks to bounce back from a shocking season finale collapse as the Orlando Magic visit Philadelphia in a critical NBA Play-In Tournament matchup Wednesday.

The Orlando Magic enter Wednesday night's Play-In Tournament clash against the Philadelphia 76ers with everything to prove and a star who needs to rediscover his scoring touch.

Paolo Banchero was phenomenal for most of March, tallying 105 points across a three-game stretch that had Magic fans dreaming of a deep playoff run. But the final week of the regular season told a different story. His usage rate dipped from a season-high 27.8 percent down to 24.9 percent over the last nine games, and his scoring average fell below 18 points per contest.

The timing could not be worse. Orlando comes into this matchup bruised from a humiliating loss as 13-point favorites to a depleted Boston lineup in the regular season finale. Banchero took 22 shots in that defeat, tying his second-highest attempts of the season, yet converted just seven of them including a blank 0-for-5 from three-point range. He did manage 23 points by getting to the free-throw line nine times, but the Magic still collapsed.

Despite the poor finish, Banchero has shown he can dominate this Philadelphia squad when Joel Embiid is absent from the lineup. In two meetings without the former MVP, he dropped 32 points on 10-of-18 shooting with 11 free throws made. With Embiid ruled out again for this Play-In tilt, the 6-foot-10 forward faces an ideal opportunity to exploit a smaller Sixers defense.

The betting markets reflect this expectation. Projections have Banchero landing between 23 and 25 points, and oddsmakers have installed Philadelphia as a two-point favorite at home. The over/under sits at 222 points. Play-In favorites laying three points or fewer have historically been strong investments, compiling an 8-3 straight-up and against-the-spread record since the format's introduction in 2021.

Tyrese Maxey will counter for Philadelphia as the dynamic guard looks to heat up from beyond the arc against an Orlando defense that has struggled to contain perimeter shooting. Maxey buried three or more triples in two of his three encounters with the Magic this season.

The opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at the Wells Fargo Center, with Prime Video carrying the broadcast nation. Banchero will need to deliver a performance worthy of a franchise cornerstone if Orlando hopes to survive and advance in this sudden-death format.
