Gotham win first NWSL Shield as Seattle and Utah secure playoff places
Gotham FC claimed their first NWSL Shield as the league's largest Decision Day concluded with Seattle securing the final playoff place and Utah reaching the postseason for the first time in club history. Kansas City and Washington also confirmed home quarter-finals, according to The Guardian's report on Sunday's regular-season finale.
Watch the highlights:
All 16 teams played in eight simultaneous matches, with Gotham and San Diego competing for the Shield. The stakes extended beyond the regular-season title: four teams were contesting home-field advantage, while three were seeking the remaining playoff places. Before kickoff, the league had run 50,000 simulations and identified more than 200 possible playoff brackets across 6,561 combinations of match results.
San Diego scored the day's first goal against Bay FC in San Jose in the ninth minute, with Gotham scoring against Utah seconds later. Gotham ultimately retained their position at the top and celebrated with the trophy in front of their supporters at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Seattle's match also featured Jess Fishlock's final regular-season appearance, with the veteran leaving the field after the Reign had scored a go-ahead goal important to their playoff hopes.
The finale marked a broadcasting first for the NWSL, with one network carrying every match on the final day. ESPN assigned Gotham's match to its main channel and the other seven to ESPN+, alongside an ESPN2 studio programme hosted by Kelsey Riggs Cuff and former Gotham captain Ali Krieger. The production used more than 60 cameras and over 150 staff around the country, plus roughly 20 in Bristol.
Coverage did not follow the planned schedule throughout. A five-set college volleyball match between Tennessee and Missouri pushed the beginning of Gotham's game to ESPN2, delaying the studio programme until about 25 minutes into the football. The Guardian also reported a switch away from Portland's feed during Sophia Wilson's penalty run-up, while some viewers reported audio-synchronisation problems.
The studio coverage combined live match updates with guests, including Megan Rapinoe from Seattle and Portland's Olivia Moultrie. On the field, the completed results settled the remaining postseason questions without San Diego overtaking Gotham. Attention now turns to the playoffs, which begin on Friday, with Utah preparing for their first appearance and Kansas City and Washington assured of hosting their quarter-finals.
