Aston Villa beat Sevilla 3-1 to claim Antonio Puerta Trophy
Aston Villa scored three times in 12 minutes to overturn Sevilla’s lead and win the Antonio Puerta Trophy. The victory marked Unai Emery’s return to his former club.

Aston Villa beat Sevilla 3-1 to win the Antonio Puerta Trophy on Friday, scoring three times in 12 minutes after falling behind at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. BBC Sport reported that Ross Barkley, Alejandro Garnacho and Max Jenner supplied Villa's goals in the friendly, which honours the former Sevilla player who died in 2007.

Watch the highlights:

Isaac Romero put Sevilla ahead after the interval before Barkley brought Villa level. Garnacho then scored and Jenner added the third to complete the turnaround. Villa were the first English club invited to contest the trophy, and their victory prevented Sevilla from adding to a record of 12 wins in the previous 14 editions.

The fixture also brought Unai Emery back to a ground associated with a sustained period of success in his managerial career. The Villa boss managed Sevilla from 2013 to 2016, winning the Europa League in each of those three years. His return ended with the visitors joining Granada and Boca Juniors as teams to have beaten Sevilla in the commemorative match.

Sevilla established the trophy a year after Puerta's death, and this was its 15th edition. An academy graduate, Puerta made his senior debut during the 2003-04 season and played 88 times for the club. He helped Sevilla claim five trophies in 15 months, including consecutive UEFA Cups, the competition now known as the Europa League, and made one appearance for Spain in 2006.

Puerta died aged 22 in August 2007, three days after suffering cardiac arrest during a league match against Getafe. The fixture created in his memory initially involved Spanish opposition before Sevilla began inviting clubs from abroad. Boca Juniors were the first overseas participants in 2016, with subsequent visitors including Roma, Schalke, Independiente del Valle, Al-Ittihad and Al-Qadsiah.

For Villa, Garnacho started alongside centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who had made just one start since joining from Southampton. Striker Brian Madjo also returned from injury as a second-half substitute. He had been absent since scoring on his debut against Paris St-Germain in the Super Cup in August, making the Sevilla match an opportunity to return to action as Villa collected the trophy.
