Alligator provides unexpected company as Dahmen navigates tricky shot near water hazard
PGA Tour player Joel Dahmen found himself with unusual gallery company during Thursday's round when an alligator made an appearance near his shot from a water hazard's edge at the Zurich Classic.

Professional golf rarely lacks for dramatic moments, but Joel Dahmen experienced something truly unique during Thursday's opening round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. As the American golfer approached a shot from the ridge of a water hazard, he was joined by an unexpected spectator: a large alligator that appeared to take a keen interest in his proceedings.

Watch the highlights:

The incident occurred on the par-4 14th hole at TPC Louisiana, where Dahmen found himself in a challenging position after his approach shot landed in a tricky spot near the water's edge. As he assessed his options and prepared for the delicate chip shot, course officials spotted movement in the water that immediately drew attention away from the golf.

Eyewitnesses reported that the alligator, estimated to be approximately eight feet long, emerged from the water and positioned itself on the bank just meters from where Dahmen was preparing to play his shot. Rather than causing alarm, the situation seemed to add to the atmosphere of the unique team-format tournament, with spectators pulling out their phones to capture the unusual moment.

Dahmen, known for his candid personality and sense of humor on social media, handled the situation with remarkable composure. After a brief delay while course marshals assessed the situation, officials determined the alligator posed no threat and allowed play to continue. Dahmen executed his shot successfully, landing his ball on the green before completing the hole with a solid putt.

The Zurich Classic, which features a unique two-player team format, has become famous for its wildlife encounters, with alligators a common sight around the water features that characterize the Louisiana course. However, such proximity to an active shot remains relatively rare, and the moment quickly became a talking point among players and fans alike.

Speaking after his round, Dahmen expressed gratitude for the smooth resolution of the unusual situation. "You see gators all week out here, but not usually right next to your ball," he said with characteristic humor. "I figured if I made the shot, maybe he'd be impressed. If not, I was going to blame the gator." The incident added another memorable chapter to the tournament's reputation for delivering unexpected entertainment beyond the competition itself.
