NFL suspends 49ers owner Jed York for six games and fines him $500,000
The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six games over a personal conduct policy violation. Three games have been credited as served, making him eligible to return on October 20.

San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has been suspended for six games and fined $500,000 by the NFL following his arrest in an Ohio prostitution sting earlier this year. The league announced the disciplinary action on Friday for a violation of its personal conduct policy, according to reporting by The Guardian.

Watch the highlights:

York has already received credit for three games of the suspension. He has not attended games or league meetings during the current season, the report said. His eligibility to return begins on October 20, the day after San Francisco's game against Washington. The announced six-game penalty therefore includes time the league considers already served.

The arrest took place in August at a mobile home park. Officers with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force alleged that York was trying to pay $160 for sex with someone he believed was a prostitute. He was taken to jail and subsequently released after posting a $5,000 bond, The Guardian reported.

Prosecutors initially charged York with engaging in prostitution but later changed that charge to disorderly conduct. He entered a no-contest plea to the amended charge and also pleaded no contest to possessing criminal tools. The latter charge concerned his use of a phone to answer an undercover online prostitution advertisement, according to the report.

For the two offences, York received one-day jail sentences that were to run concurrently, rather than consecutively. When he entered his pleas, he was credited with one day already served. The court penalties also included a $1,150 fine. Police had seized the $160 involved in the case, and that money was subsequently transferred to the human trafficking task force as part of the plea. York also completed an online course.

Friday's announcement adds a league suspension and a separate financial penalty to those court outcomes. York's sporting investments extend beyond the 49ers: The Guardian also reported that he holds stakes in Leeds United of the Premier League and Scotland's Rangers through 49ers Enterprises. The disciplinary action announced on Friday was imposed by the NFL under its own conduct policy.
