Carreras counterattack helps Bath beat Harlequins 33-17 in season opener

Bath began their league campaign with a 33-17 bonus-point victory over Harlequins at Twickenham Stoop on Friday, with Santi Carreras scoring a long-range try that helped turn a closely contested first half in the visitors' favour. The opening exchanges brought two tries for each side. Dan du Preez marked his Bath debut by scoring from a maul, while Joe Cokanasiga supplied their second try. Harlequins responded through Will Porter, who exploited loose lineout possession and beat three defenders, and Chandler Cunningham-South, who finished after an Oscar Beard turn created the opportunity.

Carreras then intervened as Harlequins threatened another score around the half-hour. Tyrone Green approached the Bath full-back with Beard available outside him, but Carreras met Green's pass with his boot, lifted the ball into the air and gathered it one-handed. The Argentina international continued roughly 75 yards to score, transforming a dangerous defensive situation into Bath's third try and a 21-10 advantage.

Bath followed that counterattack with another score immediately before half-time. A penalty kicked to the corner gave them a lineout platform, and Dan Frost finished from the resulting maul to secure the bonus point. Harlequins, playing without Marcus Smith, Alex Dombrandt and George Furbank, had produced attacking openings but went into the break having conceded four tries.

The hosts struck again after the restart. Cadan Murley's run down the left established the position for Pedro Delgado to score from close range, giving Harlequins their third try. Their recovery was complicated a few minutes later when Sam Riley received a yellow card for an illegal tackle on Beno Obano. Bath did not immediately extend their advantage, but their lineout drive delivered again in the final 10 minutes, with Ewan Richards scoring after another penalty to the corner.

The result was accompanied by concern over Sam Underhill, who left the field early in the second half. The Guardian reported that Bath head coach Johann van Graan feared a possible biceps injury. That remained a concern rather than a confirmed diagnosis in the report, leaving Underhill's condition unresolved after an otherwise successful opening match for Bath.
