Rio Riakporhe Sets Sights on World Heavyweight Championship After Dismissing British Scene
Rising British boxing star Rio Riakporhe has warned the heavyweight division to brace itself, insisting he is "very serious" about making a significant impact at world level. The London-born puncher, who has been steadily building his reputation on these shores, has dismissed suggestions he is content with domestic honours and outlined a clear blueprint for world championship glory.
Watch the highlights:
Riakporhe, who boasts an impressive 15-0 professional record with 12 knockouts, has been making waves in the British heavyweight scene but insists his ambitions stretch far beyond just collecting domestic titles. The 29-year-old cruiserweight-turned-heavyweight has been meticulously preparing for the step up in competition.
"Everyone keeps talking about the British scene, but I'm not interested in just being a British champion," Riakporhe declared in an exclusive interview. "I want to be world champion. I'm very serious about doing real damage at heavyweight. This isn't a hobby for me, this is my life and my legacy."
The Hackney-born fighter, who works as a firefighter when not in camp, has been linked to several high-profile fights that would accelerate his ascent up the heavyweight rankings. His promoter has confirmed that discussions are underway for a potential clash with a top-10 ranked contender later this year.
Riakporhe's power-punching style has drawn comparisons to some of boxing's most devastating heavyweights, and his combination of size, speed, and aggression has impressed ringside observers. However, he knows that translating cruiserweight success to the heavyweight division requires additional adjustments.
"I've been working on everything - my movement, my stamina, my ring craft. The heavyweight division is a different beast, and I respect every man in that ring. But respect doesn't mean fear. When my opportunity comes, I'll be ready to take over," he added.
With the heavyweight division currently in a state of flux following recent title changes, Riakporhe's camp believes the timing could be perfect for a new star to emerge. The British fighter has also called out domestic rivals, stating he is prepared to face anyone in his quest for world title contention.
