Carreras inspires Bath to five-try opening win at Harlequins

Bath opened their Gallagher PREM campaign with a 33-17 victory at Harlequins on Friday, September 25, scoring five tries at Twickenham Stoop. Santiago Carreras supplied the standout individual contribution, while the visitors secured a try bonus point before half-time. According to BBC Sport's match report, Carreras turned a dangerous Harlequins attack into a score for the visitors by intercepting Tyrone Green's pass with his boot. The Argentina full-back lifted the ball, gathered it with one hand near the touchline and raced away to finish under the posts. His intervention came with both teams having scored twice, and helped Bath establish control before the interval.

The official scoring record shows Dan du Preez opening Bath's account in the 12th minute, followed by Will Porter's reply four minutes later. Joe Cokanasiga scored in the 20th minute and Chandler Cunningham-South answered in the 25th. Carreras then struck in the 32nd minute, before Dan Frost added Bath's fourth try in first-half stoppage time. Finn Russell converted all four, giving the visitors a 28-10 lead at the break.

Harlequins reduced that deficit after the restart through Pedro Delgado, whose try was converted by Connor Slevin. Their recovery was interrupted by Sam Riley's yellow card in the 53rd minute. BBC Sport reported that the replacement hooker was penalised for a high tackle on Beno Obano, although Bath did not score during his absence. The home side remained within 11 points until the closing stages.

Ewan Richards entered the match in the 66th minute and scored five minutes later, according to the official timeline. Russell missed the conversion, leaving the final margin at 16 points. Bath's five tries came from five different scorers, with Russell's four successful conversions adding eight points. Harlequins finished with three tries and one conversion.

Speaking to BBC Radio Somerset, Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan welcomed the away victory while acknowledging there was still work to do. He also raised concern about Sam Underhill, saying the injury appeared to involve his biceps and could keep him out for some time. No confirmed recovery timetable was given.
