League investigates Andover-Paulsgrove abandonment after visitors fall to six players
The Hampshire Premier Football League is investigating a match abandoned with Andover Town leading Paulsgrove 8-0. The visitors were reduced to six players, with differing accounts emerging over the circumstances.

The Hampshire Premier Football League is investigating the abandonment of Andover Town's match against Paulsgrove after the visitors were reduced to six players while trailing 8-0. BBC Sport reported that Saturday's Division One fixture ended early in the second half, with Andover's manager questioning the circumstances and posts appearing to come from Paulsgrove attributing the withdrawals to injuries.

Watch the highlights:

Andover led 7-0 at half-time. Manager Robbie Skeates said four Paulsgrove players did not return for the second half, leaving the away side with seven on the pitch. Andover then scored an eighth goal before another Paulsgrove player went off injured. Under football's laws, a match cannot continue once either side has fewer than seven players.

In a statement on Andover Town's website, Skeates disputed the explanation for the reduced numbers. He said all 11 opposing players had appeared to leave the pitch without difficulty at the interval, and that Paulsgrove's manager had told him he would struggle to get them back out. Those comments represent Skeates's account of events, rather than findings from the league's investigation.

BBC Sport reported that several posts on X appearing to come from Paulsgrove's official account said the affected players were genuinely injured. One reply to Skeates argued that injured players could not be made to continue. The broadcaster also said it had asked the league for Paulsgrove's contact details, but that request was declined.

A league spokesperson confirmed an investigation was under way, describing that as the standard process for an abandoned game, and said no further comment could be made until it was complete. Skeates said Andover would submit a report. On the club's website, he expressed an expectation that Andover would receive the points, but acknowledged uncertainty about how the scoreline and goals would be treated.

The fixture involved teams with contrasting league positions. According to BBC Sport, Andover are in mid-table in the 16-team competition, which sits at the 12th level of the English football pyramid. Paulsgrove are bottom after losing all 10 games this season, including three completed matches in which they were beaten by at least eight goals.
