Matthew Brennan Wins Vuelta Stage Two on Grand Tour Debut
Matthew Brennan claimed his first Grand Tour stage victory on Sunday, winning stage two of the Vuelta a Espana in an uphill sprint at Manosque. The 21-year-old British rider, competing in his first Grand Tour for Visma-Lease a Bike, finished ahead of Bahrain Victorious rider Pau Miquel and overall race leader Tadej Pogacar. Mads Pedersen crossed the line fourth.
Watch the highlights:
The official Vuelta race report said Brennan survived a demanding 202.1-kilometer route from Monaco that included several hills before producing a decisive acceleration in the finale. He opened a clear advantage over his rivals in the sprint, securing the victory only weeks after his 21st birthday. It was his first opportunity to contest a sprint in the three-week race.
Visma-Lease a Bike entered the finish with more than one option. Wout van Aert attacked with two kilometers remaining as the road climbed toward Manosque, and Pogacar responded to the move. The pair were brought back, allowing Brennan to contest the sprint from the reduced group behind them.
Brennan said after the stage that Van Aert's attempt to take the red jersey had been part of the team's plan, while he remained ready for the sprint if the attack did not succeed. He also credited teammate Christophe Laporte with guiding him through the hectic approach to the finish.
Pogacar's third-place finish ensured that the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider retained the overall leader's red jersey. Ethan Hayter had threatened his lead by collecting bonus seconds during the stage, but he was distanced before the finish. Pogacar had also followed Van Aert's late attack before returning to the group that contested the final sprint.
The result gave Brennan a victory at his first sprint opportunity in a Grand Tour and moved him into contention near the top of the overall standings. Pogacar will carry the red jersey into stage three, which the Vuelta organizers described as the first mountain stage of the 2026 race, with the route heading to Font-Romeu.
