Lankshear heads Middlesbrough into second with anniversary win over Wolves
Middlesbrough marked their 150th anniversary match with a 1-0 victory over Wolves at the Riverside Stadium, moving into second place in the Championship. Will Lankshear scored the only goal after half-time, heading in Tommy Conway's cross in front of a sell-out crowd, according to The Guardian's match roundup.
Watch the highlights:
The result took Middlesbrough above West Ham and left them with 18 points from nine matches, two behind leaders Swansea. West Ham, who had drawn the previous evening, were third on 16 points. The anniversary celebrations at the Riverside included a pre-match tifo, with Lankshear's decisive header securing three points for the home side.
For Wolves, the defeat was their second in the league since relegation last season. They remained fifth with 14 points from eight games, having played one match fewer than each of the four teams above them. The narrow scoreline left Middlesbrough four points ahead of their visitors in the standings after the anniversary fixture.
Swansea stayed ahead of Middlesbrough by coming from behind to beat Norwich 2-1 at home. Jacob Wright gave Norwich the lead before the half-hour, but second-half goals from Moussa Yeo and Adam Idah overturned the deficit. It was Swansea's third comeback victory of the season. Manager Vitor Matos praised his players after preparations disrupted by their late returns from international duty.
Stoke also strengthened their position near the top, winning 2-1 at Bolton despite playing 70 minutes with 10 men. Maksym Talovierov was sent off for bringing down Kyliane Dong, but goals from Lamine Cisse and Ben Wilmot helped secure Stoke's first victory in Bolton since October 1990. Their fifth win in six league games put them fourth on 16 points.
Birmingham joined the group on 14 points with a 1-0 derby victory at West Brom. August Priske converted a 41st-minute penalty after being fouled by Nat Phillips, leaving Birmingham seventh and West Brom ninth. The day's results kept several clubs closely grouped behind the leading pair, with Middlesbrough's home win ensuring they finished above West Ham and within two points of Swansea.
