Wigan captain Liam Farrell to retire at end of 2026 season

Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell will retire from rugby league at the end of the 2026 season, bringing down the curtain on a 16-year senior career with his hometown club. BBC Sport reported the decision on Monday, citing an announcement from Wigan, which said the 36-year-old second-row forward will finish playing when the current campaign ends.

Farrell has made 428 appearances for Wigan since his debut in 2010. The club’s account of his career lists 18 major honours: six Super League titles, five League Leaders’ Shields, five Challenge Cups and two World Club Challenge victories. Those totals make his retirement a significant change for a side he has represented throughout his senior career.

The forward became Wigan captain before the 2023 season. In 2024 he led the Warriors through an unprecedented quadruple, when they collected the Super League title, League Leaders’ Shield, Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge. That season stands as the clearest single illustration of the success Wigan enjoyed with Farrell serving as skipper.

His career also included 12 appearances for England. At club level, his longevity is reflected not only in the number of games he played but in the range of trophies secured across league, cup and international club competition. BBC Sport described a career that began in 2010 and remained rooted at Wigan.

Farrell had been under contract through the end of the 2027 season, according to the BBC report, but has decided to stop a year earlier. He has not played since the end of June because of a shoulder injury. Neither the BBC report nor Wigan’s announcement set out a return date before the conclusion of the campaign.

In comments published by Wigan and reported by the BBC, Farrell said his career had exceeded what he imagined possible. He also expressed gratitude for what he had achieved and said he was looking ahead to the next stage of his life, while acknowledging the sadness of no longer playing. His retirement will close one of the most decorated playing careers in Wigan’s recent history.
