Manchester United void 685 season tickets amid wider Premier League clampdown

Manchester United cancelled 685 season tickets this summer after an investigation uncovered evidence of resale on the secondary market, the Guardian reported on Wednesday. The club said the practice damaged access for genuine supporters, while United fan groups protested against the ownership's treatment of supporters. The cancellations form part of a wider tightening of ticket controls across the Premier League.

The Guardian reported that Arsenal had suspended nearly 74,000 club accounts since starting its crackdown in 2024. Bournemouth moved 600 season-ticket holders to make room for hospitality seating, while 14 of the division's 20 clubs increased season-ticket prices. Chelsea and Tottenham froze prices, but the report said both still faced disagreements with their supporters.

The Football Supporters' Association told the Guardian that groups at leading clubs believed regular matchgoers were being undervalued. Its spokesperson argued that a focus on revenue favoured occasional visitors willing to spend more on merchandise and individual tickets. That was the association's assessment of clubs' priorities, rather than an announced plan to replace season-ticket holders.

Chelsea's published rules for the 2026/27 season set out how one club is changing ticket access. Season-ticket holders must use their allocation for at least 13 Premier League home matches. Attending counts, as does forwarding a ticket to an eligible member who attends. Listing it on Chelsea's official exchange also qualifies, even if nobody buys it.

Under that policy, repeatedly leaving a seat unused without explanation could cost a supporter the chance to renew. Accessible tickets are exempt. Chelsea said it would seek to contact supporters whose seats went unused for several matches, both to check their wellbeing and explain their options. Forwarding and exchange facilities remain available until three hours before kick-off.

Chelsea also linked loyalty points for men's first-team home games to scanned attendance instead of purchase, allowing eligible exchange buyers and recipients of forwarded tickets to earn them. Away points remain purchase-based. The club said its changes followed consultation with supporter bodies and were intended to improve fairness, prevent ticket misuse and make more seats available to members.
