Hemp winner earns Manchester City victory at London City Lionesses
Lauren Hemp secured a 2-1 away win for Manchester City. Chelsea later reclaimed top spot on goal difference.

Lauren Hemp scored the winner as Manchester City beat London City Lionesses 2-1 away in the Women's Super League on Sunday. The result briefly sent City top before Chelsea reclaimed first place later in the day, according to CNA's match report, leaving the two clubs level on points after eight games.

Watch the highlights:

Khadija Shaw opened the scoring eight minutes into the second half, taking the ball around goalkeeper Mary Earps before finishing high into the net. Jana Fernandez brought London City level with a header from a corner in the 72nd minute, but Hemp restored the visitors' advantage shortly afterwards by converting Mary Fowler's cross.

Chelsea's subsequent 6-0 victory over Charlton Athletic left them ahead of Manchester City on goal difference, with both teams on 22 points. London City remained third on 16. CNA reported that Melvine Malard scored twice for Chelsea, while Charlton were still without a point this season after their latest defeat.

London City manager Eder Maestre told BBC Sport that the performance had met the standards his team was trying to establish, even though the result had not. He pointed to Manchester City's greater maturity and experience in such matches, while describing nervousness at decisive moments as an obstacle to his own side being more clinical in front of goal.

The defeat came against the backdrop of rapid development at London City. BBC Sport reported that the independent women's club, backed by Michele Kang, had built its own training facility in Kent and recruited Alexia Putellas during the summer. The club had been playing in the second tier only 18 months earlier and has set ambitions of regular European competition.

Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz also acknowledged the quality of the opposition in his comments to the BBC. He stressed that competing for honours requires maintaining standards across an entire season and finding different ways to win. Sunday's result gave his side three points despite a demanding test from a club pursuing a place among the league's leading teams.
