Merse: Arsenal back in title race control despite dropping to second

Former Premier League striker Paul Merson believes Arsenal remain firmly in control of the title race despite dropping to second place following their 1-1 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

Merson, speaking after the pulsating clash, insisted the Gunners' performance demonstrated exactly why they are genuine title contenders. The draw saw Manchester City leapfrog Arsenal at the summit after Pep Guardiola's side overcame Burnley earlier in the day, but the former Arsenal man sees plenty of encouragement in Mikel Arteta's side.

"Arsenal fans should not panic," Merson stated. "The fact they're disappointed with a point against Liverpool tells you everything about how far this club has come. Twelve months ago, people would have celebrated that result."

Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead early in the second half before Liverpool equalised through Mohamed Salah from the penalty spot after William Saliba's handball in the box. The result leaves Arsenal one point behind City with crucial fixtures still to come.

"Manchester City have to win their remaining games," Merson added. "Arsenal just need to keep winning and put pressure on them. If City slip up, Arsenal are right there. That's all you can ask for at this stage of the season."

The Gunners' display against Liverpool showcased their maturity, with the young side handling the pressure of a title race with impressive composure. Arsenal now turn their attention to their final fixtures as they aim to capitalise on any City slip-ups.

"Arteta has built something special here," Merson concluded. "The players believe they can win it. That's half the battle in football."
